Design, Prototyping, & Production
Environmental Graphic Design
Our team at JP Digital won a $150k contract to do a complex environmental graphic design project as part of a large, corporate office refresh.
A majority of the walls in this building are curved, which is something we had never encountered. My role as the design & production manager
was to develop and engineer a way to produce the 3d elements, and oversee the production and quality of the printed 2d graphics.
For the 3d elements on these curved walls, we were initially considering very complex CNC machining solutions that were beyond our in-house production capabilities.
Using measurements from the job site, I built 3d models of several of the curved walls in order to better evaluate the radius & curvature.
Through this process our team realized that the curvature was not as severe as we had thought, and we shifted our focus from complex CNC machining, to using a bendable substrate
that would conform to the curvature of the wall.
After evaluating numerous substrates, we decided to use 1" thick expanded PVC due to its capability to provide a clean finish.
Through iteration, testing, and refinement, we pushed the capabilities of our machines and developed a successful finished product.
